Where are you from and what did you study?
Born and raised in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico — a city rich in culture and known as the birthplace of both mariachi and tequila.
Where did you study, and what was your major or specialization?
I studied general medicine at the Autonomous University of Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, near the U.S. border with El Paso, Texas. I later completed my social service in Jalisco, focusing on primary care and preventive health.
What inspired you to join the medical field?
For as long as I can remember, I wanted to be a doctor. I loved visiting the doctor as a child, knowing they could explain what was wrong and make me feel better. That feeling of relief and understanding inspired me to bring the same comfort to others.
Can you describe your role at Immunocine Cancer Center?
I handle the initial assessment and diagnosis of prospective patients. I conduct a thorough review of their medical history and, along with the oncologist and radiologist, determine if the patient will benefit from our treatment and if it’s safe for them. I also accompany patients during their first appointments in Cancún, ensuring their experience is as comfortable and effective as possible.
What do you find most rewarding about your job?
I value Immunocine’s personalized approach to treatment, which allows me to connect with patients and their families beyond their illness. It’s incredibly fulfilling to see patients leave recharged with hope and energy — it inspires me every day.
How does the Immunocine Dendritic Cell Treatment (IDCT) protocol stand out in cancer care?
This treatment is remarkable because it’s specific, personalized, and non-invasive. It’s like reprogramming the malfunction in your immune system. I believe it won’t be long before this treatment becomes standard and widespread because of its potential to revolutionize cancer treatment.
Can you share a memorable patient success story?
A moment I’ll never forget happened when I was about to enter a patient’s biopsy. My phone rang, and it was the first patient I treated at Immunocine. He said, “Dr. Eli, I just got out of my PET CT scan, and they reported no evidence of disease. The doctors who had given up on me a year ago can’t believe it.” I remember tears of joy streaming down my face.
What do you like to do in your free time?
I love to travel whenever I can to learn about new cultures, and I practice CrossFit daily for health and enjoyment.
What is your favorite place to hang out in Cancun?
Marina Puerto Cancún — an open-air plaza where you can walk around and enjoy spectacular views, along with some great restaurants.
What is your favorite restaurant in Cancun?
Marbella, a hidden gem by the sea with the best seafood in Cancún. It’s simple yet unbeatable in terms of freshness and flavor.
Can you share a fun fact about yourself that people might not know?
I’m a huge NFL fan! I not only watch games but also understand the strategies and plays. People are often surprised by how much I know about players and teams.
What is your favorite book or movie and why?
Los ojos del perro siberiano by Antonio Santa Ana. It’s a novel that deeply explores judgment versus acceptance. The dog’s perspective in the story symbolizes unconditional acceptance, contrasting with the harsh judgments people can face in difficult times. The book resonates with me, especially in my work in patient care, where empathy and acceptance are essential.
